| The small heat shock proteins Hsp 20 and alphaB crystallin in cultured cardiac myocytes : differences in cellular localization and solubilization after heat stress . ^^^ These cellular characteristics of Hsp 20 were compared with those of its closest relative , alphaB crystallin , which is also highly expressed in heart . ^^^ Like alphaB crystallin , Hsp 20 is normally located in the cytoplasm of the cardiac myocytes . ^^^ Also at the level of Triton solubility , differences exist between the two related proteins ; while alphaB crystallin , like other small heat shock proteins , becomes insoluble upon heat stress , Hsp 20 remains largely soluble . ^^^ Our results indicate that Hsp 20 and alphaB crystallin , despite their structural similarities , display conspicuous functional differences . . ^^^ |

| BACKGROUND : The small heat shock proteins HSP 20 , HSP 25 , alphaB crystallin , and myotonic dystrophy kinase binding protein ( MKBP ) may regulate dynamic changes in the cytoskeleton . ^^^ METHODS AND RESULTS : Western blotting identified immunoreactive HSP 20 , alphaB crystallin , and MKBP in rat heart homogenates . ^^^ Subcellular fractionation demonstrated that HSP 20 , alphaB crystallin , and MKBP were predominantly in cytosolic fractions . ^^^ Chromatography with molecular sieving columns revealed that HSP 20 and alphaB crystallin were associated in an aggregate of approximately 200 kDa , and alphaB crystallin coimmunoprecipitated with HSP 20 . ^^^ Immunofluorescence microscopy demonstrated that the pattern of HSP 20 , alphaB crystallin , and actin staining was predominantly in transverse bands . ^^^ |
